Buck's Student Visionaries of the Year Fundraiser

Jan 21, 2024

MY WHY   In the fall of 2008, at just 18 months old I arrived at the hospital with congestive heart failure and a diagnosis of High-Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).  My life had changed forever. Cancer took away what I'd always thought would be a normal childhood. My life became living in and out of the hospital with bone marrow aspirations and spinal taps, and long days at clinic getting blood, platelets, and chemotherapy. At the end of my first year of treatment, I relapsed in my Central Nervous System, but continued to fight for nearly five years.  After enduring many rounds of high-dose chemotherapy and radiation, I was finally declared cancer-free.

My first experience with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was in 2012, when I walked a mile and held my lantern high at Charlotte's Light The Night event at just 5 years old.  With my LLS balloon in hand, I finished the last lap on my grandfather's shoulders. In 2015, I shared my story as the Honored Hero for the Charlotte Man and Woman of the Year campaign.  I have made lifelong friends with other cancer families, volunteers, and staff members through my work with LLS.

At 16 years old, I celebrate being cancer-free for over 10 years. Through sharing my journey with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Campaign, I have seen many step forward to raise money for more research, patient education and support, and advocacy that has benefitted families like mine.  I want to raise money to help all the heroes, big and small, fighting cancer... but I can't do it alone.

Visionaries look to the future—and see infinite possibility.
They challenge the status quo—and make the impossible possible.
They boldly imagine a better world – and lead the charge to create it.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was built on that same vision - of a better world - one without blood cancers.

I am a visionary; I have a vision for a world without cancer, but I need your help. This year, I’m proud to be a part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign, working to raise as much as possible for LLS’s mission.  I have chosen patient education and support as my pillar of my campaign focus.  My moonshot goal is to raise $ 1 MILLION.

As a global leader in the fight against blood cancer, LLS:

  • Funds cutting-edge research leading to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics and personalized medicine that are improving and saving the lives of patients
  • Provides free education and support for blood cancer patients and families, including personalized, one-on-one support, assistance with identifying and enrolling in clinical trials, and more.
  • Mobilizes thousands of advocates to drive policy changes that accelerate the development of new cancer treatments and break down barriers to care.

Please consider joining this fight by making a donation. All donations are greatly appreciated and tax-deductible. Please visit my website often and tell friends who would also like to donate!

Thanks to your support, my efforts will help ensure this generation is the last to see cancer.

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you!
